Maintaining a balance between 'me time' and 'academics'.

Maintaining a balance between 'me time' and 'academics': How does one strike a balance between academics and self-care when school gets one so busy?

ACADEMICS
SOCIAL LIFE

These are some of the things that have worked well for me...

1. Make time for yourself too, it's important for your mental health and wellbeing.

It is very important for one to always make time for their personal life outside from being a student. You do not want to find yourself miserable and missing out on enjoying life outside from school, so make time for yourself by going to the salon to get your hair done and taking a walk around campus or your neighborhood and most importantly make time for your family as they can be your greatest support system during difficult times such as exam or test periods.

2. Make time for socializing and avoid locking yourself in your room all the time.

After chasing those assignment deadlines and during preparation of tests and exams, go out with friends and do something for fun such going to the mall and catching a movie or join a social club on campus. This is another way of taking a break and refreshing your mind so that you can get back to your academic routine feeling refreshed and energized.

3. Be organized and follow a routine

Plan your time wisely by making use of a planner that has dates so that you are always aware of you test dates, exam dates and your assignments submission dates so that you can prepare well in advance. When all this is done, make a study plan and stick to it so that you avoid last minute preparation of tests and exams, this can help you became well prepared and becomes less stressful when the dates are approaching.

4. Ask questions

Make use of your lectures, tutors, they are there to guide you. Ask questions, you are not stupid if you do not understand any content, instead asking questions gains you more understanding and clarifies a lot more that you thought you understood but actually did not. Lastly, you can always ask a classmate for help if you feel that they are better at something than you, it is always good to learn from others.

These are just few tips that have helped me navigate my academics while not forgetting that I have a life apart from being a student, I hope this helps.

Fun fact about me is that I am actually the life of the party and share jokes, but I am surprisingly an introverted, shy and quiet around those who do not know me. I am a student at the University of Johannesburg and thus see it fit to blog about my experiences as a student in general and share my academic journey for those who can relate as well as sharing lifestyle content including health and wellness. Amidst all that is going on in one's life, one needs to find a balance and find coping mechanisms and I would like t
